Following on from the Great Barr 6th Form mission statement to be an innovating forward thinking school we have developed apprenticeship opportunities within the school.

We have recognised that both from within Great Barr 6th form and outside there is a great wealth of talent that we are keen to employ through the apprenticeship scheme. Adam is a great example of this initiative having been a student in the school from Year 7 to Year 13. Adam came to a decision not to go to university at the end of year 13 and applied for an IT apprenticeship vacancy opportunity within the schools IT support department. Adam was successful and he is now progressing very well through his apprenticeship programme.

With Great Barr school being such a large employer in the area we are currently offering two apprenticeship schemes within the school and will be looking to increase the offer in future.

Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships

Advanced Apprenticeships give you the chance to progress further and gain qualifications up to NVQ Level 3 — the equivalent of two A Levels. You can also gain more advanced technical certificates and develop your Key Skills.

Because they are more advanced, you will usually need a Level 2 qualification before you start. For example, you could have (or be working towards):

  • Five GCSEs at grades A*-C
  • The Higher Diploma
  • An NVQ Level 2

You may also need specific subjects like English, Science or Maths for the Advanced Apprenticeship you are interested in.

Higher Apprenticeships give you the chance to work towards Level 4 qualifications, and possibly even progress onto a higher education qualification like a Foundation Degree.
