About

English Literature is a stimulating and exciting A’ level to study. This course is for you, if you enjoy reading a variety of books, being involved in exploring and analysing texts, and if you are prepared to question and debate ideas about literature, society and culture.

During the AS course ’The Struggle for Identity in Modern Literature’, you will read and explore a variety of texts that are centrally concerned with issues of identity. Across a diverse range of literary genres, social backdrops, and historical periods the texts will confront you with questions of how an identity is constructed, across a broad spectrum of issues: sex, race, gender, politics, culture and religion. You will encounter protagonists who must make compromises with their values, who stand at odds with their time, and who embody the struggle to define their own identity. At A2 the course offers a unique opportunity to extend and develop your interpretative and analytical skills through the study of a range of literary texts and critical analysis from Chaucer to the present day.

Assessment

The course is a mixture of examination and coursework components. Assessment is by means of one written examination and coursework for AS and at A2 a further written examination and an extended essay. Students will sit the examinations in the summer sessions.

“As well as enjoying reading, analysing and discussing literature, I gained invaluable communication and presentational skills, which have helped me in my career as a sales negotiator for a national company of estate agents”
Katherine Haughton, Year 13 (2009)

“English Literature is a great subject because the focus is not only English but society. The breadth of the subject means that you learn more about yourself as a person and this development is crucial when the time comes to go to university. I am currently studying for a degree in Politics at Nottingham University, which is mainly due to the skills I acquired studying English Literature. With hard work and the support of my teachers, I was able to improve upon my predicted grade and achieve grade A. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone!”
Ashley Bertie Year 13 (2009)
